How to size a UPS
Sizing a UPS means determining how big your UPS needs to be to protect your loads. Follow these steps:
- Make a list of all the equipment that requires protecting. Remember to include monitors, terminals, external hard drives, and any other critical equipment.
- Each drive has a voltage and amperage requirement (these figures can be found on the back of the equipment). Multiply these figures together to determine (VA) Volts/Amps. Some devices may list their power requirements in watts (W). To convert to VA, multiply watts by 1.4.
- Add the VA requirements for all your components.
- Choose a UPS with a VA capacity at least as large as your system's total requirement. Most UPS systems provide approxmately 5 minutes at full load. Longer runtime needs can also be met. Please call for inquires.
- You may want to oversize the UPS to take into consideration any future expansion needs.
