How to size a UPS

Sizing a UPS means determining how big your UPS needs to be to protect your loads. Follow these steps:

  1. Make a list of all the equipment that requires protecting. Remember to include monitors, terminals, external hard drives, and any other critical equipment.
  2. Each drive has a voltage and amperage requirement (these figures can be found on the back of the equipment). Multiply these figures together to determine (VA) Volts/Amps. Some devices may list their power requirements in watts (W). To convert to VA, multiply watts by 1.4.
  3. Add the VA requirements for all your components.
  4. Choose a UPS with a VA capacity at least as large as your system's total requirement. Most UPS systems provide approxmately 5 minutes at full load. Longer runtime needs can also be met. Please call for inquires.
  5. You may want to oversize the UPS to take into consideration any future expansion needs.
